José Martí: Selected Writings
As good as it is, I can only read a chapter or two before needing a rest. Meister Eckhart seems to have an extremely deep understanding of the spiritual life. I keep wondering if he just reads this way or if he was not completely open about himself. In other worlds, is he a product of the university or of God? My belief in the latter keeps me reading. By the way, I don't think the translator really understands him include me in that group but I think very few would. Wish the author was alive today so I could ask some questions Format: Paperback Verified Purchase.
A fine selection of Meister Eckhart's writings, but not for the faint of heart. This is solid Christian stuff, about God, father, son and holy spirit, and about the symbols of the faith and its spiritual insights into the relation of man and God. Unless you have a pretty good idea about the tradition of the Christian faith you will quickly give up, but for those who persist, there are wonders here.
He talks about the notion of God as a trinity of action not a dualism. This is a review of only the Kindle edition of this book, not the hard copy, although some observations may apply to both. Excellent overview of Eckhart's work, with little commentary by the translator. This work will appeal to persons interested in nonduality generally, and who appreciate Christian theology as influenced by NeoPlatonism, as well as persons interested in exploring nonduality in Christian theology in relationship to nonduality in other traditions, especially Buddhism and Advaita.
One who disdains what her or see sees as shallowness in Christian thought a mindset common can be surprised in work like Eckhart's, thought that rivals the most indepth teachings of any tradition, West or East. Likewise, Eckhart here offers a path from the '"world" back into "it" in a transformed way, much like the Buddhist path of leaving to return.
Eckhart offers no spiritualized transcendence of matter and life-here-now, yet, he guides into a way free of immersement in identity with time and place, as well as free of identity with the provisional self.

The book is very interesting way of thinking about God. However, it is dragged out in language and becomes very dry reading after a while. It has great insight as to who we are in God and how we should retain our relationship with him. This is one of those books that you find yourself quoting a lot. This is such an inspirational book for those of us who were raised Catholic. It is hard to believe that these teachings could have come from a Dominican Monk in the Dark Ages of the Inquisition.
It is interesting to note, that the Pope condemned his work, after he died. I'm glad that these writings survived the Inquisition so we could have them today. My favorite passage is, "The eye with which I see God, is the same eye with which he sees me. One of the most permanent features of his political life was his attachment to Pompeii. As a politician, his greatest failing was his consistent refusal to compromise; as a statesman his ideals were more honorable and unselfish than those of his contemporaries.
Cicero was the greatest of the roman orators, posessing a wide range of technique and an excpetional command of the Latin tongue. He followed the common practice of publishing his speeches, but he also produced a large number of works on the theory and practice of rhetoric, on religion, and on moral and political philosophy. He played a leading part in the development of the Latin hexameter.
Perhaps the most interesting of all his works is the collection fo remarkably informative letters, published posthumously. These not only contain a first-hand account of social and political life in the upper classes at Rome, but also reflect the changing personal feelings of an emotional and sensitive man.
